Bridging the Military-Civilian Divide

October Is Veterans’ Voices Month in Minnesota

Minnesota has taken a position of national significance by designating the month of October to honor Veterans—Veterans’ Voices Month. The Minnesota Humanities Center worked with Veterans in Minnesota communities, Representative Jerry Newton (D-District 37A), and Representative Bob Dettmer (R-District 39A) to write a bill designating October as Veterans’ Voices Month. Senator John A. Hoffman is the Senate sponsor of this legislation (SF 2700).

The Veterans’ Voices Month legislation passed by unanimous vote in both chambers, and Governor Dayton recently signed this bill into law. Minnesota will be the first state in the country to designate an entire month for Veterans.

This law will not only honor, recognize, and celebrate the accomplishments of Minnesota Veterans, but educate the public through schools and organizations by sharing and studying Veterans’ experiences. Veterans will be encouraged to share their stories through art, essays, and poetry in an effort to assist the public in understanding this unique military culture.
