Home For Heroes

Home for Heroes

With a focus on Veterans Homes, but with messages that resonate with all assisted living/nursing home situations, this programs looks at that the decision making process that goes into placing a loved one in an assisted living environment.  The decision is difficult, but when it is made the couple can then focus on revitalizing their relationship.  When one no longer needs to be the primary care provider it allows for much personal healing.  Viewers, through personal stories of a handful of residents, will see themselves and future decisions that they’ll be making; they’ll realize that these homes are special places where personal care and camaraderie are omnipresent.  Produced by Twin Cities Public Television and the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs. Bridging War & Hope

Bridging War & Hope

Minnesota has a long history of sending National Guard units to the front line.  In 2011 and 2012, a group of 22 Minnesotans were deployed to Zabul Province in southeastern Afghanistan.  The mission of their deployment was to work with local agricultural ministries to prepare them to begin to help their constituent farmers.  Located in some of the poorest, most austere surroundings imaginable, the Minnesota National Guard’s Agribusiness Development Team is bridging war and hope by providing opportunities to Afghan farmers that otherwise wouldn’t be available. MN Original: Minnesota History Center’s 1968 Exhibit

As part of the Minnesota Historical Society’s traveling exhibit on the year 1968, a group of 20 plus veteran volunteers assemble a replica of a Huey Helicopter from the Vietnam era. The exhibit, which will tour around the country, explores one of the most turbulent and influential years in America’s history. MN Original is a production of Twin Cities Public Television and is made possible by the State Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund and the citizens of Minnesota.

Petronella Ytsma

MN Original: Petronella Ytsma

Petronella Ytsma’s photography illuminates the multi-generational effects of Agent Orange and Dioxin used during the Vietnam War. In 2007, Ytsma went to Vietnam to document these effects for her project Legacy of an Ecocide: Portraits of Agent Orange. Her latest work turns the camera toward Minnesotan veterans of the Vietnam War. Ytsma hopes her striking images spark conversation and consideration for the victims of Agent Orange. MN Original is a production of Twin Cities Public Television and is made possible by the State Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund and the citizens of Minnesota.

MN Original: Xavier Tavera

Photographer Xavier Tavera’s striking portraits tell the stories of Minnesota’s Latino and minority communities. With works exhibited internationally and included in the permanent collections of the Weisman Museum, The Minneapolis Institute of Art and The Plains Museum, Tavera is helping to carve out a place for Chicano artists in the Midwest. We get a glimpse of three of his most recent series, one in which he photographs Latino war veterans, Calle Lake (Lake Street) which documents the Latino subculture of the Lake Street area in Minneapolis, and El Circo (The Circus) in which modern subjects are posed similarly to old circus photos. MN Original is a production of Twin Cities Public Television and is made possible by the State Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund and the citizens of Minnesota.
